What is the breed/species of the bird that was sold about 20 yrs. ago in a Chinese style bamboo cage?

I saw it frequently in the midwest and the bird was very small - a little bigger than a hummingbird with dark plumage, sleek and narrow frame, and very vivid shocks of color. It was ALWAYS showcased in a Chines style bamboo cage. I don't remember a song - seem like it just cooed. I want to know the species and if it's still available.
