Springfield Gi 1911 vs. Ruger GP-100 Revolver?

Really having a hard time choosing between these two. Love the 1911 style as well as revolvers. I've hear surprsingly good reviews about the springfield even with its low pricetag, and something about the 1911 is just sweet. However I hear the Ruger gp-100 is a hefty, accurate, life-long gun that is hard to beat for the price. I will be going to the range alot, and using either one as a self-defense gun. Naturally I live in Chicago so carry is somewhat out of the question, however I do alot of hiking and wouldn't mind a pistol on my side up north. Any advice?
