Moving to NYC with my dog?

Ok, here`s the thing. I am 15 years old and after I finish college I plan on moving to New York City. I know I sound like a stupid kid but you have to understand that is just not the case. My parents are well aware of my plans and completely support me. I have been to the city about four or five time, one of those visits being the day of the 2003 black-out. My family and I were stuck on a subway for hours and when we got out we had to spend the night hiding in a hotel work out room. I have saved about $600 and I know that that isn`t even enough to pay for half a months rent. My real question is, NYC an ok place to have a small dog. I have a yorkie and where ever I decide to live she will come with me. She is an inside dog most of the time. She is trained to something called a potty patch and is not a big barker. My biggest fear is that while I am at work some one will break in and hurt her in an attemp to rob me. If anyone has a story to share about moving to NYC with their dog please share. Thanx!
