Do you think a couple should discuss making a major purchase before buying?

My husband bought a John Deere Gator ($7000) last Spring without discussing it first. He knew I was upset. Now I believe he bought a VW SUV over the weekend and he still hasn't told me. He is in the US on leave from the military. We have discussed that there is no need for us to buy a car until we return to the US permanently in March. He already has a truck in storage waiting for us! What do you think about his actions? Am I being unfair to think this was wrong of him?
